Benefacts National Lottery Directory

Nearly 30% of the net proceeds of Ireland’s National Lottery are devoted to ‘good causes’. These are described in law as sport and recreation, national culture (including language) and heritage, the arts, the health of the community, youth, welfare and amenities, natural environment and anything else Government may determine.

In 2020, after providing for prizes and overheads, the National Lottery generated €266m for good causes. These funds go first to the Regulator of the National Lottery then in turn to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform who distributes them as part of the annual budget process. 2020 Revised Budget Estimates breakdown.

Eight State bodies distribute grants that are funded wholly or in part by the National Lottery proceeds. These are the Departments respectively of Rural & Community Development; Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth; Housing, Local Government & Heritage; Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media; the Arts Council, Heritage Council, HSE and Sport Ireland.

Using data published by these public bodies wherever available, Benefacts National Lottery Directory gives access to details of grants provided in 2020 to more than 2,500 nonprofits or schemes using funds that came wholly or in part from proceeds of the National Lottery.
